DTF (Direct-To-Film) printing is one of the most powerful and flexible techniques for creating custom apparel today. But great results start with one key thing: choosing the right blank.
In this article, we’ll walk you through the must-have features to look for when selecting blanks for DTF printing. From fabric type to weight, surface texture and colours — here’s what really makes a difference when it comes to DTF success.
What is DTF and why does your blank choice matter?
DTF is a heat-transfer method where a design is printed on a special film and then applied to fabric using a heat press. It works on many fabric types and allows for vibrant, detailed prints.
However, the quality of the blank garment will make or break the result. A poor blank can lead to faded colours, poor wash resistance or just an uncomfortable feel — all of which affect your customer satisfaction.
1. Best fabric composition for DTF
100% pre-shrunk cotton – absorbs ink well and gives a clean, vibrant print.
Ringspun cotton – softer, stronger, and smoother than regular cotton. Ideal for a polished, professional look.
Cotton/poly blends (80/20, 60/40) – acceptable for DTF, though prints may be slightly less intense. But they’re often more durable and wrinkle-resistant.
Pro tip: For hoodies and crewnecks, cotton/poly blends are a solid option as long as cotton remains the dominant fibre.
2. Fabric weight matters (a lot)
Fabric weight (measured in GSM – grams per square metre) affects both printability and comfort.
- T-shirts: 160–200 GSM → Below that is too thin and may distort or let ink bleed through.
- Hoodies/Crewnecks: 250–350 GSM → Heavier fabric = more structure and durability.
A great DTF tee is often pre-shrunk, ringspun cotton, classic fit and comes in multiple colours.
3. Surface texture: smooth is key
DTF prints best on tight-knit, smooth fabric.
❌ Avoid textured or open-weave knits.
✅ Choose fine, even surfaces for consistent ink adhesion and sharp detail.
4. Colours that work best with DTF
🎯 White – best for bright, bold colours
🎯 Heather grey – trendy, neutral, and print-friendly
🎯 Black – excellent with bold, high-contrast graphics
⚠️ Avoid neon, very pale pastels, or uneven dyeing — these can impact print clarity.
5. Finishing details matter
✔️ Double-stitched collars with shoulder taping → hold shape longer
✔️ Reinforced hems → boost garment life
✔️ Side seams (vs. tubular) → better fit and cleaner look
6. Perfect blanks for beginners and pros
Some industry-favourite models strike the perfect balance between quality, price and availability. They’re widely used for:
- Unisex fit
- Long-lasting durability
- Huge colour range (often 20+)
Great for branded merch, startup fashion lines, events, or client-ready apparel.
